Somewhat Injured

31 Jan

Hello Everyone!

I have been really busy with school work so I just wanted to let you know whats going on in the world of Christina. I know you all miss me ;)

First of all the pictures from the F^3 half came. I searched through four different photographers and found only this gem of a picture

I think this picture sums up the half marathon in one  word: FREEDOM! Haha this picture is the worst race pic I have seen. Anyways…

So my left calf has been bugging me after the half marathon. I ran on Monday and Tuesday and it felt like someone was going to snap my calf muscle. So I headed to the Running Institute to check it out. Once you have had an injury any sign of remote pain is always cautioned. So the orthopedic said that I sprained my calf muscle. When I heard this I was like how in the world did I do that? He gave me a prescription for physical therapy for a month. He said to take one week off from running. Which is not too bad. I mean I can train for a half marathon in 6 weeks right? ;)

So today before my Physical Therapy appointment I went on the elliptical for 50 minutes

Yes compression sleeves and capris are all the rage at the gym! I got quite the looks from people today ;)

I played a little hill game on the ellipitcal which made the time go by much faster. After my workout I headed downstairs to the Nova Care Physical Therapy room at the Rey Meyer Fitness Center. The physical therapist told me why I strained my calf:

Basically my left hip is weaker than my right hip and my pelvis tilts naturally. Due to the weak hip muscles, glute and core muscles my cannot internally rotate when I take a stride when I run. So my calf compensates for my hip. I am going to physical therapy tomorrow again. I know that its just a calf sprain and I shouldn’t worry but lets face it I am little worried. In November 2011 I injured my left IT band. I was out from running for four months. I hope that this injury heals quickly so I can get back into the game.

Have you ever dealt with an injury?

Glad to hear you are okay. The ankle is doing a lot better. I am trying to slowly ramp up the miles and make sure I don’t re-injure it!

I wonder if your calf had to do with your hard run right before the half! I hope PT helps!

I’ve had four stress fractures. Three of them were at the same time. LOL.

Hmmm…. You know I think I might have gotten injured due to a culmination of factors: 1. I live near hilly trails so I would run my long runs on there. 2. I would wear my pure flows on long runs 3. I’m a larger person so minimalist shoes are harder for me to break in. 4. I never stretch. If you want to get an expert opinion on the pure flows call a local running store or go to runnersworld.com I hope this comment helps you :)
